Just last week, we here at NZCasinoClub.com talked about SkyCity Casino’s license being temporarily suspended and now they are back in the news again. This time, though, it is for a robbery at one of their casinos.
In an unexpected and audacious move, SkyCity Auckland casino witnessed a daylight robbery on Friday, compounding the already heightened issues facing the SkyCity Entertainment group. With concerns surrounding the casino's dealings with regulators in both New Zealand and Australia, the robbery has intensified the spotlight on the entertainment group.
While information remains limited, what we do know is that the robbery occurred around 12:30 PM on a weekday. According to the New Zealand Herald, an unidentified assailant approached at least one casino staff member and demanded cash. The thief intimated possession of a weapon, but it is unclear if he ever displayed it. The employee, erring on the side of caution, handed over the money. The exact amount pilfered remains undisclosed.
Despite the audacity of the crime, no injuries were reported. In the wake of the incident, SkyCity spokesperson emphasised that the event was never a "threat to the public" and reassured that the affected staff would receive necessary support.
Given that casinos often employ sophisticated surveillance systems, with cameras meticulously monitoring almost all areas, it's a wonder that such a crime could even occur. Whether due to ignorance or sheer audacity, the thief seemed undeterred.
Footage has, unsurprisingly, captured the assailant, aiding the police in identifying him. Sources have revealed that he is "known to authorities", although they are yet to release further details. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the individual.
Beyond the immediate shock of the robbery, the broader concerns for SkyCity Entertainment remain its regulatory dilemmas. New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) has mooted the possibility of shutting down the casino for a period of up to 10 days, following reports from a patron that the casino blatantly disregarded responsible gambling protocols.
The ball now lies in the court of the New Zealand Gambling Commission, which will make a decision on the proposed suspension.
Meanwhile, in Australia, two separate investigations are also in progress concerning SkyCity Entertainment. The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, along with South Australia’s Office of the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner, are examining allegations that SkyCity's Adelaide casino infringed anti-money laundering regulations.
The outcomes of these investigations remain uncertain, with decisions potentially emerging in the next month or possibly extending up to a year.
In light of recent events, SkyCity Entertainment finds itself facing multiple challenges on varying fronts. The daylight robbery, while shocking, is perhaps overshadowed by the looming regulatory concerns that threaten the casino's operations. With the perpetrator still at large and multiple investigations ongoing, SkyCity is surely bracing for a turbulent period ahead.
